Healthy Homes

Is a Healthy Home assessment required?

On 1 July 2019, The Healthy Homes Standards (part of the Residential Tenancies Act) became law. Accordingly, any rental home must comply with specific insulation, heating, ventilation, moisture ingress and drainage regulations, and draught stopping.

All private rentals must comply within 90 days of any new or renewed tenancy after 1 July 2021, with all private rentals complying by 1 July 2024. All boarding houses must comply by 1 July 2021. All houses rented by Kāinga Ora (formerly Housing New Zealand) and registered Community Housing Providers must comply by 1 July 2023.

Landlords are responsible for maintaining and improving the quality of their rental properties. These standards will help landlords have healthier, safer properties and lower maintenance costs for their investments. The measures will also make it easier for tenants to keep their homes warm and dry.

How to get your Healthy Home certification?

The process is straightforward. You can give us a call or send us an email. One of our assessors will visit your property and do an interior and exterior audit.

At the end of the audit process, we will give you a full report about the assessment outcome and any required work to bring the property up to the standards, along with a quotation for the remaining work. Once everything is up to the standards, we will give you a Healthy Home Certification.
